Course Overview

The Marine Electro Technical Officer (ETEO) Course is a 16–17 weeks residential pre-sea training programme, designed as per STCW 2010 standards (without High Voltage endorsement). This course prepares engineering graduates and diploma holders in electrical and electronics disciplines for a promising sea-going career as Electro Technical Officers (ETO).

Duration:16–17 weeks classroom + onboard placement support (up to 6–8 months)

Eligibility Criteria

Category 1: Four-Year Engineering Degree

BE/B.Tech (including Lateral Entry) with 50% marks in:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Electronics and Telecommunication/Communication Engineering
  • Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering
  • Or equivalent specializations

English Requirements:

  • Minimum 50% marks in English in 10th or 12th standard
  • Alternative: 50% in degree exam with English as medium of instruction

Institution Requirements:

  • Recognized by State/Central Government or AICTE
  • Must have passed 10th and 12th from recognized board
Category 2: Lateral Entry Engineering Graduates

BE/B.Tech via Lateral Entry Route:

  • Background: Diploma holders who joined 2nd year of degree course
  • Original Admission: Based on Matriculation only
  • Degree Marks: 50% in relevant electrical/electronics engineering streams
  • Same Specializations: As mentioned in Category 1

English Requirements:

  • Minimum 50% marks in English in 10th standard
  • Alternative Options: 60% in Diploma with English medium, OR 50% in degree with English medium

Institution Requirements:

  • Diploma and degree recognized by State/Central Government or AICTE
  • Must have passed 10th from recognized board
Category 3: Three-Year Diploma

Diploma with 60% marks in:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Electronics and Telecommunication/Communication Engineering
  • Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering
  • Or equivalent specializations

English Requirements:

  • Minimum 50% marks in English in 10th standard
  • Alternative: 60% in Diploma with English as medium of instruction

Institution Requirements:

  • Diploma recognized by State/Central Government or AICTE
  • Must have passed 10th from recognized board
Essential Criteria
  • Passport: Mandatory for maritime career
  • Age Limit: Maximum 35 years (General Category)
  • Course Frequency: 3 batches per year for flexible admission
Medical Standards
  • Physical Fitness: Fit for sea service under standard maritime norms
  • Vision: Maximum (+/-) 2.5 with no color blindness
  • Overall Health: Meeting merchant shipping medical standards
  • No Height Restriction: Unlike other maritime courses
Age Relaxations
  • SC/ST Candidates: +5 years (Maximum 40 years)
  • OBC Candidates: +3 years (Maximum 38 years)
  • Women Candidates: Additional +2 years for each category

Course Structure & Training

The ETO course at CMC combines theoretical foundations with real-world marine electrical practice. Cadets undergo:

  • Training on Full-Mission Engine Room and Electrical Simulators
  • Extensive practical sessions in our Ship-in-Campus
  • Hands-on use of tools, workshops, electrical control systems & marine panels
  • Diagnostics, repairs, troubleshooting of marine electrical/electronic systems
  • Development of soft skills, teamwork, safety culture, and leadership

The core training modules are enhanced by real-time applications in our advanced simulation and practical environments:

  • Operational training on shipboard auxiliary electrical systems
  • Fault diagnosis & preventive maintenance of electrical components
  • Use of onboard workshops, tools, and control systems
  • Training in safety, discipline, and effective communication skills
  • Daily physical and mental development activities to build resilience and team spirit

Career Path & Opportunities

Upon successful completion, candidates receive:

  • Indian CDC & INDOS Number
  • STCW & DGS Course Completion Certificates

Graduates will be placed onboard ships as Trainee Electro Technical Officers, with career progression leading up to Chief Electrical Officer onboard commercial vessels.
