Course Overview

The B.Tech Marine Engineering – Lateral Entry program at Coimbatore Marine College is designed for diploma holders or students with prior technical education who wish to directly enter the second year of the full 4-year Marine Engineering degree. The course provides a comprehensive blend of theoretical learning and hands-on marine engineering training, preparing students to serve onboard merchant ships and eventually grow into Chief Engineers.

This 3-year residential course is divided into 6 academic semesters and covers marine machinery, ship operations, safety procedures, and marine electrical systems. Students gain full exposure to practical training through our Ship-in-Campus facility and industry-grade simulators.

Eligibility Criteria

Category 1: DG Shipping Alternate Training
  • Candidates who have passed 1st year training from DG Shipping approved Alternate Training Scheme (excludes MERI graduates)
Category 2: Engineering College Graduates

Candidates who have passed 1st year from AICTE approved Engineering Colleges in:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum Requirement: 60% average marks
Category 3: 3-Year Diploma Holders

Candidates with 3-year Diploma from AICTE or State Board approved institutions in:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Marine Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electrical & Electronics Engineering
  • Minimum Requirement: 55% aggregate marks in final year
Category 4: Ship Building Diploma

Candidates with 4-year Diploma in Ship Building Engineering from AICTE or State Board approved institutions

  • Minimum Requirement: 55% aggregate marks in final year
Category 5: Specialized Diploma Streams

Candidates with 3-year Diploma in specialized categories:

  • Mechanical Engineering Streams: Automobile Engineering, Machine Tools and Maintenance, Plant Engineering, Production Technology, Production Engineering, Advanced Diploma in Tool and Die Making
  • Electrical Engineering Streams: Electrical Power System
  • Electrical & Electronics Streams: Digital Electronics, Electronics and Communications, Electronics & Telecommunication, Industrial Electronics, Electronics Production & Maintenance, Instrumentation, Instrumentation & Control
  • Minimum Requirement: 55% aggregate marks in final year
Essential Criteria
  • English Proficiency: Minimum 50% marks in 10th/12th standard or degree/diploma
  • IMU CET: Qualified in IMU Common Entrance Test (apply at www.imu.edu.in)
  • Passport: Mandatory document
  • Age Limit: Maximum 25 years (General Category)
Medical Standards
  • Vision: Maximum (+/-) 2.5 with no color blindness
  • Height: Minimum 157 centimeters
  • Overall Fitness: As per Merchant Shipping Medical Examination Rules, 2000
  • Hearing: Must meet maritime standards
Age Relaxations
  • SC/ST Candidates: +5 years
  • OBC Candidates: +3 years
  • Women Candidates: Additional +2 years for each category
  • Island Residents: +5% marks relaxation for Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands ST candidates

Category 5 Partial Exemption

  • Limited Exemption: Not eligible for exemption in Applied Mechanics and Heat Engine subjects
  • MEO Class IV & II: Must appear for specific Part 'A' subjects
